General Dentistry FAQs

Do children need regular cleanings?

Yes, as much as (or more so) than adults do. Regular checkups and cleanings help the dentist optimize your child’s dental hygiene, prevent issues that could become serious, and set the stage for a lifetime of healthy, beautiful smiles. By getting children used to visiting the dentist regularly, you can also help them avoid needing more extensive dental treatment later in life.

What are dental sealants?

Dental sealants are super-thin layers of biocompatible acrylic that the dentist coats onto the chewing surfaces of one or more teeth. They act as an additional barrier against food particles and harmful oral bacteria that can erode healthy tooth enamel. While often recommended to help children successfully prevent cavities, sealants may also be placed on adult teeth that may be at high risk of cavity development.

What should I do in a dental emergency?

A dental emergency can be any situation in which immediate, same-day dental treatment is required. That can include a fractured or broken tooth, knocked-out tooth, or other situation involving intense tooth discomfort. If you experience one, then the first thing you should do is call our office and schedule an emergency treatment as soon as possible so you cn receive the care you need.

Invisalign® Aligners FAQs

What does being an Invisalign® Preferred Provider mean?

Dr. Calcagno is one of few Invisalign® preferred providers in the country, which means she has treated hundreds of simple and complex cases using the innovative orthodontic aligners. Her extensive experience and knowledge in custom-designing Invisalign® treatment helps ensure that you enjoy optimal results no matter your unique orthodontic needs.

How do I qualify for Invisalign®?

The good thing about Invisalign® clear aligners is that a wide variety of patients can enjoy their benefits. Thanks to advanced, digital imaging and design technology, coupled with our team’s extensive experience, Invisalign® aligners can address a multitude of orthodontic cases. Before recommending Invisalign®, we’ll perform a comprehensive examination to diagnose your tooth misalignment and ensure that you’re a good candidate.

Can I use Invisalign® with other cosmetic treatments?

With their virtually invisible appearance, Invisalign® is often the most cosmetically appealing choice for straightening crooked teeth. If you require further cosmetic treatment to address issues such as teeth stains, chipped or cracked teeth, and more, then your smile makeover may include one or more other cosmetic enhancements in addition to your Invisalign® treatment.

Implant Dentistry FAQs

How does an implant prosthesis work?

Dental implant prostheses are made of three main parts: implant posts, abutments, and lifelike restorations (crowns, bridges, or dentures). The implant posts are made from biocompatible titanium, which your jawbone heals to over time. The abutments are connected to the posts and are used to secure the custom-designed restoration in place with highly lifelike results.

What benefits come with dental implants?

Besides the highly realistic appearance of your replacement teeth, the most significant benefits of an implant prosthesis stem from the replacement of your lost teeth roots. Implant posts are the only way to replace them, and therefore, the only way to mimic the support of your natural teeth without needing clasps, adhesives, or supportive crowns. The posts also reestablish stimulation in your when you bite and chew, which restores the flow of nutrients your jawbone relies on to stay strong and healthy.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

Whether you’ve lost one, several, or all of your teeth, you may be a good candidate for dental implants. To find out for sure, your dentist will carefully examine your teeth, jawbone, and oral structures to check for signs of dental disease (like gum disease) or other issues that might interfere with your implant placement. For instance, if your jawbone has grown weak, then you may require jawbone grafting to strengthen it before it can support your implant posts.
