The Science Behind Invisalign®

Tooth movement must be meticulously planned before treatment can begin, and the movement must be gentle enough to allow the surrounding bone and tissues to remodel themselves accordingly. The gradual application of pressure is usually applied through braces consisting of brackets bonded to your teeth and arch wires to provide tension and pressure.

With Invisalign®, the tooth movement process is simplified. Instead of brackets and wires, the system relies on aligners that are designed to mimic your upper and lower dental ridges. Although the aligners closely replicate your teeth and their alignment, each set consists of minor alterations that gently guide crooked teeth back into their proper position.

What Does Treatment Entail?

As one of few Invisalign® Preferred Providers in the country, Dr. Calcagno will guide you through the entire treatment process. The first step is a comprehensive examination to determine that your crooked teeth can be effectively treated with Invisalign®. Then, she will take highly-detailed digital images, X-rays, and 3D computer models of your teeth that skilled Invisalign® technicians will use to custom-create your aligners.

Invisalign® usually consists of up to six sets of aligners that you will change as your treatment progresses. You will wear each set of aligners for at least two weeks, and then change them for the next in the series. Each aligner will move your teeth towards their desired positions in increments, creating a gradual path of movement allowing your oral supportive structures to accommodate the change.

How Long Does Invisalign® Treatment Take?

Because of the careful nature of tooth movement, Invisalign® treatment can take up to 12-18 months to complete, depending on your specific needs, and response to treatment. Patients with other existing issues, such as tooth decay, gum disease, or one or more missing teeth, may need to undergo other restorative treatments before Invisalign® can be recommended.
