Why Do Teeth Require Extraction?
A dentist may need to remove a tooth for a variety of reasons. In some cases, misalignment may be due to crowding. Extracting a tooth can reduce the crowding and improve the alignment of your smile. Other times, advanced gum disease, or periodontitis, has loosened a tooth to the point that it will require extraction. The two most common reasons for a tooth extraction are related to infection or wisdom teeth.
- Infection: An infected or abscessed tooth develops following tooth decay. As a cavity spreads, bacteria eventually makes its way through the inner tooth structure to the pulp. The pulp sits at the center of the tooth, supervising the flow of nutrients and blood to and from the tooth. Once infected by bacteria, the pulp can die. This kills the tooth, allowing infection to spread to the jawbone and surrounding teeth. An extraction may be necessary to stop the infection. Persistent toothaches, swelling around the tooth, a foul tasting discharge, fever, and sharp pain, are all warning signs of an infection or abscess.
- Wisdom Teeth: Also known as third molars, wisdom teeth erupt when a patient is in their late teens or early 20s. The mouth comfortably holds 28 teeth, but the arrival of the wisdom teeth forces 32 teeth in the same space. Patients can develop impaction, infection, or misalignment. To prevent this, Dr. Calcagno and Dr. Quan will examine your mouth and decide if the wisdom teeth require extraction.
What Does the Extraction Process Involve?
First, we will perform a thorough examination of your teeth and gums, using digital x-rays to peer beneath the gum line. Intraoral cameras will allow us to take high quality images and plan your treatment. If your tooth requires extraction, you will receive dental sedation to ensure you remain calm and relaxed during the procedure. The tooth will be removed and we will provide all necessary aftercare information. If the tooth removed wasn’t a wisdom tooth, we can help replace your lost tooth with a lifelike prosthetic, such as a dental bridge or a dental implant.
