How Do I Address Common Emergency Situations?

When you experience a dental emergency, you should contact us as soon as possible. You can call our office or click the emergency appointment button on the homepage. There, you can give more details about your situation before even talking to us. Now, what about the time between coming into the office? What can you do to address common emergency situations?

Chipped Tooth

If you chip a tooth, see if you can recover any pieces and bring them with you. If this isn’t possible, we can still repair the tooth. Rinse with warm water and place a cold compress against the side of the face to control swelling. You can also stem any bleeding with a piece of gauze.

You can take an over-the-counter pain medication and see us as soon as possible. If the discomfort is due to food or an object stuck between your teeth, don’t use anything other than floss to try and dislodge it. If floss fails to work, see your dentist!

Knocked-Out Tooth

If you knock out a tooth completely, then pick it up by the crown (visible portion) only, never touch the root. Gently rinse the tooth under running water to remove any dirt or debris. Try not to rinse away any tissue. Then place the tooth in a glass of milk (or into the socket, biting down carefully to hold in place) and bring it with you to see us.

Loose/Lost Filling/Crown

If a restoration becomes loose, come see us right away. If you lose one, see us as well. Try to avoid any sugary foods or drinks, as this could cause discomfort due to the exposed tooth. If you have any questions about addressing an emergency situation, then please contact our office today.
