Do you brush your teeth every day? What may seem like a minor means of preventive dentistry is actually essential for maintaining a healthy smile. Otherwise, the risk of tooth decay or even gum disease developing can increase exponentially. There are a number of tips for brushing correctly, otherwise you may not be protecting your smile as well you hope.
Tips for Proper Toothbrush Use
- Choose the right toothbrush: What toothbrush should you use? For a manual brush, we recommend one with soft bristles. If you brush too hard with medium or hard bristles you could actually damage your enamel, which increases the risk of tooth decay. You can also use an electric one as well, whichever you’re more comfortable with. For children, be sure to pick up an age appropriate option. You can even help you child pick one with a favorite character or superhero on it.
- Reach every surface of the teeth: You should approach the teeth at a 45-degree angle and clean the front of the teeth using circular motions. Be sure to also reach the tops of them as well.
- Two minutes, no less: You should use a toothbrush for a minimum of two minutes. You can set a timer or for children you could find a fun video or app that times it for them, making the process fun.
- Clean your teeth daily: You should brush your teeth at least twice a day, once in the morning and again before you go to bed. When you do, you remove plaque buildup and reduce the severity of tartar buildup, helping protect your smile from tooth decay and gum disease between dental cleanings.
