We are especially proud to offer CEREC technology, which uses detailed digital images to fabricate customized restorations here in the office. When you receive CEREC crowns from your Rochester, MN dentist, you will enjoy efficient treatment, as well as stunningly realistic results.
An Introduction to CEREC
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. After Dr. Calcagno determines that a dental crown is the best way to repair your smile, she will carefully reshape your tooth to accommodate the restoration. Then she will take detailed pictures of your teeth, using sophisticated digital cameras. These images feed directly into our computer, creating a three-dimensional map of your tooth and surrounding tissues. The computer is also connected to a CAD/CAM milling system. Based on your specific images and measurements, the machine can create a lifelike porcelain crown in a matter of minutes. When the restoration is complete, Dr. Calcagno will apply the crown using dental cement.
Why We Use This System
There are significant advantages to the CEREC imaging system, including:
- Speed of treatment: In the past, your dentist would take impressions of your teeth to send to a dental lab. The impressions would sit in the lab, as technicians worked their way through a backlog of orders. After creating your crown, they would send it back to the office. The process would take several weeks, and you would have to find time for two separate dental appointments. With the CEREC system, Dr. Calcagno can prep your tooth, create the crown, and apply the restoration in a single visit.
- Aesthetics: CEREC crowns look very lifelike. The porcelain used in the milling system reflects light like natural dental enamel, and it comes in a variety of shades. Because you will be in the office while the crown is fabricated, Dr. Calcagno can easily choose the material that will most closely match your natural teeth.
- Less room for error: When crowns are fabricated off site, they may be slightly off kilter. Dental impressions are susceptible to changes in environment. As the impressions travel from office to dental lab, they can shrink or expand, meaning your crowns may not fit as well as our in-office restorations.
Dr. Calcagno is one of the few dentists in the area to offer CEREC crowns. She has undergone specialized training in this innovative branch of restorative dentistry, and she is ready to provide you with efficient care and lifelike crowns that will enhance your beautiful smile.
